A platform for photograpers and photo enthusiasts
In Uppsala there is a widespread interest in photography. We are many practitioners of the art form; professional photographers, amateurs, freelancers, students, and more. The county has several training programs in secondary and college, numerous photo associations, associations which offer courses in photography, as well as galleries and museums showcasing photographic art. It is also something that most people practice some form and have feelings.
Therefore, we started Uppsala Photo Festival, to create a platform for photography in Uppsala, a development opportunity and inspiration, collaboration and visibility for both photographers and photo enthusiasts.
In four years, Uppsala Photo Festival has grown into an international event with an extensive program of four legs; exhibitions, lectures, workshops and competitions. Since 2012, we have a theme each year, which was Movement in 2012, Emotions in 2013, and SELF in 2015.
This year, 2017, the theme is DREAMS.
The last festival drew 10,000 visitors, and we had exhibitions at, among other things, the Cathedral, Ungdomens Hus, Å-huset, Slottskällan, Uppsala Art Lab Kungsgatan, Gallery London, Uppsala Fotografiska Galleri, Peace House in Uppsala Castle and many more. The festival was attended by the successful photojournalist Paul Hansen, who just won the prestigious award for Picture of the Year (World Press Photo).
More than 80 photographers from eight countries exhibited, such as photojournalism professor who is also the multi-award winning photographer John Kimmich, Uppsala Photographers John Rosseau and Luciano Escanilla, and the Greek group Template Life that experimented with 13 different emotions.
To be able to continue operating a festival of great quality and with exciting content, the association’s members voted for the proposal that the festival changed to a biennial event, that takes place every two years.
